Lingdro: the 11th Century Sacred Dharma Dances of King Gesar of Tibet

“It is a performance that cannot be compared with other conventional dances because of its specialty in being rich in blessings and swift in bringing forth spiritual attainments. If this dance is watched with virtuous motivation, faith and pure perception, all the goodness in this and future lives will be brought forth and adversities such as sickness and obstacles will be pacified. This is the unfathomable power of the interdependent nature of phenomena.”

Brief History of Lingdro
Lingdro (dance of Ling, a locality in Tibet) is a tradition that transmits the Dharma to the viewer through dance performances that date back to the Great Dharma King Gesar’s court in the eleventh century. Great King Gesar was the embodiment of the Three Roots and the Buddhas of the three times, including Guru Padmasambhava. It was created for the benefit of future beings by Mipham Rinpoche and other realized beings of the Nyingma lineage by using vajra words-- the treasure house of blessing and power-- and gestures such as mudra that transmit the blessings of the Dharma to the viewer. It is a performance that cannot be compared with other conventional dances because of its specialty in being rich in blessings and swift in bringing forth spiritual attainments. If this dance is watched with virtuous motivation, faith and pure perception, all the goodness in this and future lives will be brought forth and adversities such as sickness and obstacles will be pacified. This is the unfathomable power of the interdependent nature of phenomena. Particularly, if one offers sincere prayers with faith and conviction while watching the performance, the blessings of Dralha Werma, the Gesar, will enter one’s mind and body and greatly help one to fulfill all aspirations.
This tradition was saved from extinction by Mugpo Dong lineage holder and Lingdro dance master Norbu Zangpo and his daughter Yangzom when they escaped to India from Tibet during the beginning of the Chinese occupation in this century. Today, Norbu Zangpo’s nephew, Taksar Wangdrak Jigme, the son of Taksar Lama Jamyang Sherab Oser, also the descendents of the Mugpo Dong lineage, perfectly trained himself in Lingdro under the guidance of master Norbu Zangpo and founded the U.S. Lingdro Dance Group to preserve this great tradition and to benefit sentient beings. The original purpose, to increase and disseminate the sublime Dharma teachings - the messengers of peace and happiness - throughout the world is being fulfilled. Em Ah Ho!
